Australia - Where does the water come from?

CCA Australia produces Mount Franklin, Pump, PumpED and Peats Ridge Springs bottled water.

In Australia CCA bottles water in Queensland, Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia and Western Australia. We have specialist lines within our carbonated soft drink plants for bottling water. Our water products are made and sold for the Australian market only.

The water for our bottled water products comes from sources within around two hours’ drive of our plants. The bulk of our water comes from sources owned by small businesses or farmers, who sell the water to CCA at market rates.

Water use

Water use varies per state. Annual bottled water production for all water companies accounts for less than 0.01% of the total amount of groundwater withdrawn from Australia and New Zealand.

Sustainability of our sources

Sustainable water use in Australia is paramount to the ongoing success of our business, so naturally we go to great lengths to measure, monitor and assess our use of groundwater.

CCA invests in infrastructure, stringent monitoring of its water use and undertakes rigorous hydrogeological studies at its water sources.  Licence conditions at CCA’s water sources explicitly state that any taking of water is sustainable, as does CCA Australia’s water policy.

Throughout 2007, CCA is rolling out a remote monitoring system at our water sources across Australia. The technology will enable us to see real-time standing water levels, water quality and flow rates at any site at any time of the day. The system will use CDMA and GSM mobile phone networks to broadcast the data into a central database accessed instantly by CCA’s technicians.

CCA sponsored and participated in the National Water Stewardship Forum  June 2007. The forum was addressed by the National Water Commission and aims to develop a global standard for sustainable water management by industry. We will continue to support this initiative.

As a member of Australasian Bottled Water Institute, we are held to an international standard for bottled water. Our sites are audited by ABWI on a regular basis and we have received 100% rating at some of our sites in 2007.

Coca-Cola Australia has a three year silver partnership with Landcare Australia for local projects at our water sources across Australia. The purpose of these projects is to regenerate land and contribute to local biodiversity. Through the partnership we are funding local Landcare community groups to carry out projects and setting up volunteering projects for CCA employees in each Australian state where we operate.

How much water does CCA take to produce its carbonated soft drinks?

At a recent Water and Industry seminar in Melbourne CCA was praised for our water savings by the Victorian Premier John Brumby. The Queensland Premier and Deputy Premier have also this year congratulated CCA on its water saving techniques and practices.

We use “town” or “mains” water to produce our carbonated soft drinks. We believe we are world’s best practice for our industry– nationally on average we use just 1.5 litres of water to produce one litre of soft drink. Most of the water used goes into the beverage, with just two cups per litre left to run and clean our manufacturing sites. Each year we work hard to bring this ratio down. Our 2007 water efficiency target is 1.48 L/FBL.

We use “town” or “mains” water to produce our carbonated soft drinks. We strongly support state governments mandating industry to save water through Water Savings Action Plans in conjunction with local water retailers. We work closely with state water authorities to find more ways to save water and we have won many water savings awards for our efforts.
