Continual Improvement

CCA is committed to conducting its business operations in a sustainable manner. CCA's operations are primarily focused on the manufacturing and distribution of beverages and are considered to be of low environmental impact.

In assessing the environmental impact of its operations, CCA has identified three key areas:

        Water Management
        Energy Use
        Post Consumer Waste

Water Management

CCA Australia's Water Policy outlines how we will use water in a responsible and sustainable manner.

In production across the group CCA is focussed on reducing the amount of water used to produce finished products.

Water usage at CCA is measured as the total amount of water needed to produce 1 litre of finished beverage.

In Australia CCA has set itself stretch targets to reduce the amount of water used in production.  To find out more about these targets, please Click Here.

Energy Use

CCA uses energy across all aspects of its operations including manufacturing, transportation and the refrigeration of beverages in the market. CCA is committed to reducing energy usage across the group and to implementing energy efficient technology wherever possible.

Energy usage in our manufacturing operations is measured by the amount of energy in Mega Joules used to make 1 litre of product.

New Zealand's Auckland plant was commended in 2003 for its reduction of energy consumption by the Minister for Energy.

In Australia CCA is a signatory to the Greenhouse Challenge, which is a voluntary agreement formed by Federal Government and industry to abate greenhouse gases.  CCA is also one of the largest purchasers of green power across its eastern seaboard operations in Australia.

Post Consumer Waste

As Australia’s largest manufacturer and distributor of non-alcoholic ready-to-drink beverages, CCA has an important role to play in minimising the environmental impact of our packaging.

Around half of our products are consumed away from home and we are committed to removing our packaging from the general litter and waste streams. Our objective is to use the knowledge we have on consumer behaviour to assist the extension of public place recycling.

CCA’s values are based on continual improvement and challenging the way things are done. Environmentally, this is reflected in our corporate environmental policy and particularly with our commitment to ‘always look for a better way’.

In 1994 CCA was the first company in the world to package a food grade product using recycled content in PET and later CCA was the first business in Australia to blend post consumer resin with virgin resin for a food quality package.

CCA's approach to post consumer waste is based on the hierarchy of reduce, reuse and recycle.

Expanding Public Place Recycling

Kerbside recycling has been a huge success with over 800,000 tonnes of recyclable material diverted from landfill each year. The challenge now is to transfer this model to public places, creating a consistent message.

In 2005, under the banner “Refresh, Recycle, Renew” we partnered with local authorities and our customers to trial public place recycling in key locations. This included rolling out public place recycling initiatives at various locations, including Taronga Zoo, First Fleet Park at The Rocks in Sydney, Thredbo Ski Village and Baulkham Hills Netball Park.

In 2006, CCA is focussed on working with our major customers and sponsored events to implement public place recycling on sites such as tourist attractions, public events and shopping centres. To find out more about what CCA is doing to spread the availability of public place recycling, please click here.

Don’t Waste Australia

CCA is a member of the AFGC (Australian Food and Grocery Council), who undertake environmental awareness campaigns and lobbying on behalf of industry members. These campaigns include the "Don't Waste Australia" campaign as a follow on from the hugely successful public education campaign they ran in the 1980s, "Do the Right Thing".

The National Packaging Covenant

Reducing packaging waste is a complex issue that needs to be managed throughout the packaging cycle and not purely at the post-consumer end. CCA is a voluntary signatory of the National Packaging Covenant in Australia and have outlined our commitment to reducing all aspects of packaging in our action plan.

As a signatory to the National Packaging Covenant (NPC) CCA has an obligation to:

          Commit to overarching environmental targets;

          Consider environmental impacts of packaging in all decision making processes;

          Develop and report annually on our NPC Action Plan.

As part of this commitment, we are required to implement the NPC Environmental Code of Practice for Packaging.
