The Yenda-based Australian Beer Company will next week launch a new, limited edition craft beer innovation that’s been nine months in the think tank.

Produced as a unique small-batch beer, Yenda Green Hop has been brewed in collaboration with renowned spirits ambassadors from The Exchange team.

With only 280 cases brewed, the beer will be sold as a Boilermaker serve with Highland Park 12 Year Old Single Malt in a select number of target venues from next month (August).

Now commonplace in Australia’s best bars, a “Boilermaker” serve consists of a whisky and craft beer, matched to deliver complementary flavours as the consumer slowly sips on both.

Yenda Green Hop was first conceived last October with whisky expert Dan Woolley and brought to life through an innovative nine-month flavour exploration by Australian Beer Company’s three brewers.

Woolley is part of The Exchange team of dedicated and expert spirits brand ambassadors, focused on bringing Coca-Cola Amatil’s premium brands to life for Australian consumers by delivering authentic and exciting on premise experiences and training.

With the challenge issued, the brewers called upon Dan ‘Whisky’ Woolley and the spirits team to come to Yenda and explore the world of brewing. The resulting session was an exciting combination of passion, expertise and fun, as Woolley explains.

“After an afternoon spent with the brewers in Yenda, tasting a range of whiskies like Highland Park, The Macallan, Maker’s Mark, Knob Creek Rye and Basil Hayden’s, the challenge was set to create a beer that was the perfect partner for iconic whisky brand Highland Park.

“After a good discussion on beer styles, we left the challenge in the capable hands of brewers Bob, Andy and Greg. After returning this week for the final blending we’re thrilled with the result, the brewers have created something special.”

Once labelled by whisky writer M. Jackson as the “greatest all-rounder in the world of malt whisky”, Highland Park was selected thanks to its wonderful floral nose and bonfire, heathery taste profile with just the slightest hint of peat.

Said Brewer Andy, “To complement its floral profile, we chose green hops, which simply means the hops are picked green from the bine and used immediately.

“Sourcing the green Vic Secret and Galaxy hops involved a nine-hour round trip to Hop Products Australia’s (HPA) Rostrevor Hop Farm in Bright, Victoria. After that, the hops were brewed, with some brew set aside and the remainder put into ex-whisky barrels for three months.”

For the final blending, the brewers and Exchange team were last week joined at the Yenda brewery by a select group of customers, where they blended the two in just the right proportions to create a beer perfectly matched to Highland Park.
Yenda Green Hop will be available exclusively as a Boilermaker serve at 10-20 key venues
including Surly’s (Sydney), Beer Deluxe Fed Square (Melbourne), Cobbler (Brisbane), Hains &
Co (Adelaide) and Flour Factory (Perth) from early August. For further stockist details, visit
