Iconic Lygon Street facelift gets underway

The transformation is underway to turn the original Grinders Coffee store in Melbourne’s famous Lygon Street into the ultimate coffee experience.

The transformation is underway to turn the original Grinders Coffee store in Melbourne’s famous Lygon Street into the ultimate coffee experience.

Dating back to 1962, the Grinders Coffee store has been an iconic part of Lygon Street heritage for over 50 years. An intensive month-long renovation program is now underway to transform it into a flagship store for the Grinders coffee brand and the ultimate coffee experience.

The new store will officially opened at the Melbourne International Coffee Expo (MICE) on March 17. Although it will feature state of the art equipment and sleek concrete benches, heritage will remain at its heart.

“By replacing the store’s interior walls with glass, the store’s iconic ‘Old Red’ coffee roaster will become the centrepiece,” explained Grinders Coffee General Manager Neale Wood, who donned the florescent jacket and picked up his screwdriver to kick off the renovations.

“And the store’s famous shopfront – which dates back to 1962 – was carefully dismantled and relocated to the Grinders Roastery in Fairfield, Victoria, where it will continue to tell the unique story behind the brand’s heritage and founder Giancarlo Guisti’s integral role as the forefather of Melbourne’s coffee culture.”
