Committed to her work and to the brand

Makelesi Wasile found work, love and family at the South Pacific Distillery where she began her long Illustrious career with Fiji’s oldest distillery.

Makelesi Wasile found work, love and family at the South Pacific Distillery where she began her long Illustrious career with Fiji’s oldest distillery.

Now at 57, Mrs Wasile fondly recalls her time spent with the company over the past 40 years.

“I was just 17 years old when can to work with this company,” she said.

“January, 1980, I started work as a casual worker and worked in the post for 18 years.

“From the time that I started, there were only seven women and six men working the packing line and we used the manual machine.”

She said that after almost 20 years in the packing line, she was then promoted by Joe Rodan.

“I became the assistant bottling supervisor and I have been in that post until today.

“I would like to thank Mr Rodan for giving me this opportunity and recognising my hard work.

“Since then I have seen many changes.

The company changing its management several times and I met a lot of people along the way.

“The people I met; some have retired while others have left us.”

Mrs Wasile also credits the company for introducing her to the love of her life, the late Kamatia Pene Wasile.

“We built a life together and we had six beautiful children together.

“My late husband always said that I was the mother figure in this company which is why some of my colleagues call me “Mummy”, “Aunty” or “Big Mama”.

She says despite the changing landscape, she was committed to her work and to the brand.

“I believe that the company produces only the best.”

Now in her late 50s, Mrs Wasile said she would always be grateful to God for her experience over the past 40 years.
