Embracing the opportunities, challenges and freedom that come from being part of the Amatil team

At Amatil as leaders we are developed to bring insight and inspiration to work – to energise, empower with accountability and engage others. In this Q&A Coca-Cola Amatil asks me about my experience at Amatil. I’m lucky to have a very varied and interesting career spanning different functions. I hope my journey inspires future employees to take opportunities and embrace new challenges. #onlyatamatil

What gets you out of bed in the morning?

A strong cup of Grinders coffee!

Tell us something interesting/unique about yourself?

I love to kitesurf and will chase the wind every chance I get. Not only is it great exercise and a huge adrenaline rush but it’s also led to incredible overseas adventures to stunning places where I’ve met some amazing people. My latest adventure took me to Tonga a few weeks ago where I was able to kitesurf as well as swim with the humpback whales and their calves.

Tell us about your moment of happiness at Amatil or how you deliver millions of moments of happiness for others?

I help ensure our Alcohol brands are ranged, well executed and available at a fair price in Cellarbrations, The Bottle-O and IGA Liquor to help Australians enjoy endless moments of happiness with their favourite brands: Jim Beam, Canadian Club and Maker’s Mark to name but a few.

What inspires you about your role?

Talking to the Independent bottle shop owners out in the trade to get a reality check on what we’re actually delivering to our customers in the real world and how we could improve. We sometimes get stuck in an ‘ivory tower’ way of thinking and just taking the time to speak to people at the heart of our business helps open our eyes and gives us a fresh perspective.

The pillars of our Sustainability framework are Our People, Consumer Wellbeing, Environment, Our Community.  Is there a pillar you feel really passionate about, and why?

Our People.  I really like how Amatil takes the health and wellbeing of its people so seriously, which I think is not typical of large companies and we shouldn’t take it for granted. I think the promotion of work/life balance is great with senior leaders also practicing what they preach to help drive a more engaged workforce.

What is your favourite Coca-Cola Amatil product?

Hard to choose with so many great products but if I had to, it would be Ratu Signature Liqueur. It’s our Fijian Rum Liqueur and it tastes amazing. I’ve yet to meet anyone who disagrees with me.

What is an “only at Amatil” moment you’ve had in your time with the business?

I was lucky enough to go on the IBA Trade Workshop, which was held in May this year. It was a fantastic opportunity, not only to learn more about the strategy/vision of the IBA business and network with bottleshop owners, but also to do this whilst admiring the wonders of ancient Rome. That was pretty special.

What do you enjoy most about working with your specific team at Amatil?

Whilst we work hard and face pressures and deadlines everyday, everyone always makes time for a chat and a laugh which lifts the mood and makes the workplace enjoyable

What would your advice be to your younger self?

If in doubt, just give it a crack! You’ll only regret the things you don’t do and never the things you’ve done (there might be a couple of exceptions to this so please use your common sense!)

How has your role evolved in the time you’ve been at Amatil?

The beauty of Amatil is that it’s such a big business and this provides many opportunities to try different things if you’re not 100% sure of your career path just yet. I’ve done a fair bit of moving across the Alcohol & Coffee business, starting out in commercial roles, then moving across to category and now establishing myself as a National Business Manager in the Independent sales team.  This has given me great exposure across the business and I’m excited by the opportunities that could lie ahead. I’ve been in my current NBM role for 18 months now and I love it. #onlyatamatil
