Apenisa Waqawai has spent sleepless nights and countless hours making sure that Fiji’s largest brewery and distillery were running smoothly 24 hours each week.

The dedication and hard work of the engineer to his craft resulted in a 40-year commitment that brought much joy to the Nawainika, Nalawa, Ra native.

“I have slept in my office and sometimes I bring a bag of my clothes so that I don’t have to go back home,” he said.

“Back in the 80s, I would sometimes spend two or three nights each week just to make sure that everything was ok.

“The machines had to run for 24 hours and everyone came in shifts but sometimes I would stay on longer.

"There are only three qualities that I always live by and they are dedication loyalty and sacrifice.

"To me there are the things that keep me going and kept me coming back.”

Mr Waqawai is part of a unique group of employees at Paradise Beverages (Fiji) Ltd.

“I had the opportunity to work in Suva, Lautoka and Samoa.

“Throughout these experiences I was able to gain more than I ever gave back to the company.

“I found my wife here; I got a job that put my children through school.

“As long as I am able to serve the people that I work for and the people that depend on me, I can say I have lived a full life.”

After serving the company for 40 years, Mr Waqawai says he is ready to call it a day.

“I think I’ve given my all to this company, I can walk away proud and happy that I did my best.”
