Last week, the Oasis played host to a different kind of guest speaker to our norm. As June celebrates all things sustainability, we welcomed representatives from Hallensteins to the business as they shared how they are incorporating Black Eyed Peas front man, WILL.I.AM's ekocycle brand in their range.

The Hallensteins brothers are not new to retail, the brand started in1873, with two brothers in Dunedin. Since then the brand has evolved and changed, two years ago, they introduced the RPET suit. WILL.I.AM, was a fan of the H. Brothers suits and approached the team with the idea and vision of a suit made out of recycled bottles and he spoke of the plans he had to involve The Coca-Cola Company.

This vision was big and bold and a great way to eliminate waste which we all know is a huge problem the world is facing. WILL.I.AM came up with the slogan "Waste is only waste if we waste it".

With eight attempts and 10 days to create a specific blend of fibre this process wasn't as easy as they initially thought. It took four weeks to complete and once they did Hallensteins realised that this was the fastest suit they had ever made. The fabric used in the collection is a specially-developed blend of viscose and a fibre called Repreve, which is made of post consumer recycled plastic bottles.

The jackets in the line contain a minimum of 60 percent post-consumer waste materials and the pants contain at least 53 percent post consumer waste materials. Both the suits and the material they’re made from are manufactured in China, but H Brothers took special care to partner with a factory it felt would uphold its ethical and environmental standards.
