Better environment

By striving to meet our commitments on packaging, water, energy and carbon reduction, we aim to leave a positive legacy and ensure minimal impact on the environment.

As a leading beverage manufacturer in New Zealand, we’re committed to understanding and minimising the impacts our operations may have on our environment.

The world has a packaging problem and like all companies, we have a responsibility to help solve it. By investing in our planet and our packaging, we can help make the world’s packaging problem a thing of the past. We’re committed to waste reduction, recycling, collection and innovation of packaging that are focused on where we can make the most difference.

  • By the end of 2019, all plastic bottles smaller than 1 litre and water bottles across all sizes will be made from entirely recycled plastic in New Zealand
  • This means over half of the plastic bottles produced by Coca-Cola Amatil in New Zealand will be made from recycled plastic
  • This move is part of Coca-Cola’s global commitment to a World Without Waste, and to increase recycled content and make all its bottles and cans recyclable and an extension to both company’s commitment to the Ministry for the Environment’s Plastic Packaging Declaration
  • New Zealand is one of the first countries to achieve and exceed Coca-Cola’s global sustainable packaging goal around increasing the use of recycled plastic, which aims to make all bottles with an average of 50% recycled content by 2030
  • In New Zealand, all of our plastic bottles, aluminium cans and glass packaging are 100% recyclable. This means after its use, our bottles can be re-used to make things like other bottles, t-shirts, carpets or furniture.

  • We will continue to be part of and support the Public Place Recycling Scheme which has helped install over 2400 public place recycling bins across the country.
  • We are one of 10 businesses to back the Business Sustainability Network’s new diagnostic study of NZ’s entire plastic packaging system.
  • We’re proud to be a signatory on the Ministry for the Environment’s New Zealand Plastic Packaging Declaration, committing to using 100% reusable, recyclable or compostable packaging across our operations by 2025 or earlier.
  • We Support the “Let’s put litter in it’s place” campaign by Love NZ and Be a Tidy Kiwi.

Due to supply chain issues beyond our control, some plastic bottles 1L and under, used for carbonated soft drinks, are being temporarily made from virgin plastic and not recycled plastic. This represents less than 1% of our recycled bottle production in 2020. This is a temporary measure and we are aiming to have all our plastic bottles made from 100% recycled plastic back in market by the end of the year, if not sooner.
